Tigers Deliver Books to MCS Schools!

A lofty goal of collecting 10,000 books for Memphis City Schools was born from the countless hours University of Memphis student-athletes have spent at Hanley Elementary volunteering as tutors and readers as well as working with students in other capacities.

As the campaign winds down, the Tigers have exceeded their goal. Books are being donated to seven Memphis City Schools deemed “Innovation Zone” schools.

To Whom it May Concern:

Yesterday I had the pleasure of walking in the Memphis Race for the Cure, with my mother who is a survivor. Along the route I notice the University of Memphis women’s basketball team, in their pink jerseys, cheering participants along. Being a former college athlete myself (soccer in the SEC) I know Saturday morning at 8 am, the last thing you want to do is wake up early when you don’t have to. But your players did and everyone was talking about it the whole route. I don’t think these girls understand how much their presence means to some of these women who have fought long, hard battles to get rid of breast cancer. They show these women their support just by being there and letting some random stranger know they support them and as women just to show them they are there for them without even saying a word. Just wanted to send you a note and tell yall as coaches you should be awfully proud of these young ladies spending their Saturday morning supporting a cause that affects many women. Thanks for encouraging/allowing the girls to help their community in many ways, as I was told growing up remember what goes around comes around. Good luck to yall during your season.

Saturday morning before practice and before the Heels & Hoops Gala, the women’s basketball players donned their pink jerseys and went to cheer on the participants in the Race for the Cure in Germantown. One of our assistant coaches then received this email in response to Saturday.

The women’s basketball team, along with the former Memphis Tiger-current Carolina Panthers player, DeAngelo Williams, spent time on Friday, June 8th giving back to the Memphis community.  They participated with the Samaritan’s Feet non-profit organization that helps nearly 300 million people who go without shoes each day.  (http://www.samaritansfeet.org/)

Samaritan’s feet is a great organization. It was great to be involved with helping disadvantaged children. We really brightened the kids day, but they truly touched my heart. I was honored when children and their parents were able to tell me my name and basketball number. I really love being involved in the community.
