March 1st was Read Across America Day. Tiger student-athletes from various sports spent time at schools across Memphis to help celebrate the importance of reading to elementary and middle school children!

“Thanks so much. I truly appreciate everything that the baseball team did Friday. Read Across America Day was very special for our sixth graders. The teachers and students both really enjoyed the event. The baseball players did an outstanding job. They read, signed autographs, took pictures, and answered questions. I was a very proud to be U of M alumni on Friday”
On March 1, members of the Tiger Baseball team visited Kate Bond Middle School to read to them in honor of Read Across America — a national celebration of reading.
A lofty goal of collecting 10,000 books for Memphis City Schools was born from the countless hours University of Memphis student-athletes have spent at Hanley Elementary volunteering as tutors and readers as well as working with students in other capacities.
As the campaign winds down, the Tigers have exceeded their goal. Books are being donated to seven Memphis City Schools deemed “Innovation Zone” schools.
It was a good experience for the [baseball] program because we were able to reach out to the community and improve the game in the inner city that so many kids are trying to develop a passion for.

In April, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) raised money to support the Miles for Maddie & Gracie Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser. They stood in the University Center and spoke to other students on campus about Cystic Fibrosis and the affects it has on our population. In total, they raised over $130 to give to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Memphis to help support continued research!
What Maddie & Gracie’s Fundraising Team had to say:
I wanted to thank… the U of M, for supporting the Miles for Maddie and Gracie, Cystic Fibrosis event. You all were a great help with the Josh Pastner autographed basketball and the help from the Student-Athletes. With your help, we had the most successful event we have had, in our seven years of doing this.
